Dinosaur Safari!

Dinosaur Safari!!!

This week at HDC the children have been learning all about dinosaurs! To wrap up our learning the children went on a very special dinosaur safari today!

The children were first able to decorate their own binoculars and put on their safari hats!

They then set out on a safari adventure!

The school age children researched and made all of the wonderful dinosaur signs. They then taught the younger children some fun facts as they met each dinosaur today.
Way to go School Age kids!

The first dinosaur on our safari was the Stegosaurus.

(The writing on the sign says)
*Stegosaurus was an herbivore, meaning it only ate plants.
*Stegosaurus name means, "plates lizard" due to the line of flat plates on it's back.

The second dinosaur on our safari was the Diplodocus.

(The writing on the sign says)
*Diplodocus has a very, very, very long neck.
*They have whip like tails.

The third dinosaur on our safari was the Triceratops.

(The writing on the sign says)
*Triceratops dinosaurs had big heads with shields to protect their necks from sharp teeth.
*Triceratops is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs with its features.

The fourth dinosaur on our safari was the Pteranodon.

(The writing on the sign says)
*The wingspan of the Pteranodon is close to 20 feet.
*The male Pteranodons are much bigger than the females.
*It lived up to 75-88 million years ago.
*They lived in North America.

The fifth dinosaur on our safari was the Parasaurolophus.

(The writing on the sign says)
*The Parasaurolophus used its head crest for communication.

Our sixth and final dinosaur was the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex.

(The writing on the sign says)
*T-Rex is a carnivore which means he ate meat.
*T-Rex can grow to 14 feet tall.

The children were then able to go cool off in the big T-Rex sprinkler.

They were even able to pretend to be paleontologists and dig for dinosaur bones in the sand box!

What a fun way to end our dinosaur study!

Lemons

Last week we learned
all about lemons!

As a part of our mix and make science lesson we are practicing making mixtures, this week the mixture is lemonade! The children have been testing different ways to make it. For example, using fresh squeezed lemon juice with and without sugar and using different powdered mixes and measuring out the ingredients. They are comparing methods and taste testing to discuss their results. They are also exploring volume, as they count how many scoops it takes to fill a jar with different sized materials and liquids and so much more. They are having so much fun and the learning is so natural.

Question of the day: Do you know where lemons grow?

Painting a lemon tree at the easel!

What do lemons taste like?
Oh my goodness, the faces they made when trying the lemons was priceless! LoL

Lemon print paintings!
How many segments can you count?

Will a lemon sink or float?
Both! If the lemon is peeled it will sink, if the peel is left on it will float!

Here the children are washing the table using the lemons and their juice! So many great uses for lemons!
The classrooms all smell amazing!

Lemon Estimation!
A great way to help children build their number sense.

The children made their own lemonade!
They squeezed their own lemons and added sugar to taste.

Practicing self help skills by pouring their own drinks!

After tasting all the different types of lemonade, the children discussed the results and which one they liked the best.

What a sweet week of learning!!!
