Haunted Happenings!

This week the students have been having lots of fun learning about pumpkins, monsters and other haunted happenings!
Here are just a few of the great activities that took place.
In room 1 (Aimee & Celimar's room)...
Monster math game. Roll the dice, add that many eyes to your monster and write the number.

Number Sense 1. Listen to and say the names of numbers in meaningful contexts.
Number Sense 2. Connect many kinds/quantities of concrete objects and actions to numbers.

Make a monster face out of felt.
Physical Development 9. Use thumb/forefinger in pincer grasp.
Social & Emotional Health 16. Recognize and describe or represent emotions such as happiness, surprise, anger, fear or sadness.


Monster board bean bag toss game.

Physical Development 4. Build awareness of directionality and position in space.


Estimation station! How many pumpkins, eyeballs and corn kernels do you think are in the jars?
Measurement 13. Use estimation in meaningful ways and follow up by verifying the accuracy of estimations. 

 Making monster stories with great illustrations.
Composition 16. Use their own words or illustrations to describe their experiences, tell imaginative stories, or communicate information about a topic of interest.
In room 2 (Joan & Mimi's room)...
The parent/child connection activity for the month of Oct. was to create a monster!

Visual Arts 18. Explore a variety of age-appropriate materials and media to create two and three-dimensional artwork.

 Spooky bat cotton ball paintings.

Visual Arts 19. Observe the safe and appropriate use and care of art materials.
Physical Development 9. Use thumb/forefinger in pincer grasp.
In room 3 (Jasmine's room)...
Learning about healthy food choices! The children looked through a variety of cooking / food magazines and cut out pictures of some of the food items.

Health Education 13. Discuss nutritious meals and snacks and the difference between junk and healthy food. 
Symmetry Monsters! The children put a blob of paint on the paper, folded it in half and pressed on the paper to smear it around. They were then able to add googly eyes and other items to embellish it.
 
Visual Arts 25. Explore concepts of symmetry in artwork.

In room 4 (Marcie's class)...
Pumpkin paper bags, Jack-O-Lanterns and tissue paper torn candy corns!

Visual Arts 18. Explore a variety of age-appropriate materials and media to create two and three-dimensional artwork.
Physical Development 11. Build finger dexterity. 
Footprint ghosts! The children described the feeling as the teacher painted their foot for a fun sensory experience.
 
Reading and Literature 15. Listen to, recognize,  and use a broad vocabulary of sensory words.

Health Education 14. Practice personal hygiene and safety measures. 
In room 5...

Fun shape pumpkins! The children painted at the easel then cut out the shape of their choice for their pumpkin and decorated as they liked.

Shapes and Spatial Sense 10. Investigate and identify materials of various shapes, using appropriate language


 Mummy lacing and tape mummies to practice their scissor skills.

Physical Development 8. Strengthen hand grasp and flexibility.
Physical Development 12. Use eye-hand coordination, visual perception and tracking, and visual motor skills in play activities. 

They made spider crackers! The children had to follow the recipe to assemble their spider.
 
Health Education 11. Build finger dexterity.
Health Education 14. Practice personal hygiene and safety measures.

Coffee filter Monsters!
 
Health Education 9. Use thumb and forefinger in pincer grasp.
Visual Arts 24. Use basic shapes and forms to create artwork.

 

Creepy hand ice excavation! The children added various items such as pom poms, googly eyes, mini erasers, etc... to the gloves. The teacher then added food coloring and water and put them in the freezer. The next day the children were given eye droppers, water, salt, paint brushes and tweezers to excavate and melt the ice. 
 
 Technology and Engineering 24. Demonstrate and explain the safe and proper use of tools and materials.
Health Education 8. Strengthen hand grasp and flexibility.
